Feldherrenhalle

Pinakothek der Moderne

Venue of the welcome reception on Thursday, September 9, 2010, 18.00.

The "Pinakothek der Moderne" is a museum of modern art, situated in the city centre of Munich. This unique museum presents paintings, works on paper, architecture and design under one roof and is one of the world´s largest collections of 20th and 21st centurs art. Together with the Alte Pinakothek, the Neue Pinakothek and Museum Brandhorst it is part of Munich's "Kunstareal" (Art District).

Museum Brandhorst

Latest museum of contemporary art in Munich, opened in 2009. Exciting architecture designed by Sauerbruch Hutton with beautifully colored facades - inside the interesting Udo and Anette Brandhorst Art Collection.

Frauenkirche (Dom)

The church's twin onion-domed towers, visible from afar, are the city's best known landmarks. The gothic Frauenkirche (full name "Church of Our Blessed Lady") is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Munich and Freising and is considered a symbol of the Bavarian State Capital.

 

Hofgarten

The Hofgarten (Court Garden) is a beautiful formal garden in the center of in Munich, located between the Residence and the English Garden, not far from the ESOPRS venue. One can sit in the sun, relaxe, watch people playing "boule" or have a cappuccino in the Cafe Tambosi.

  

Schloß Nymphenburg

The impressive Baroque palace to the west of Munich city was originally built as a summer residence for the Bavarian sovereigns. The main building has a variety of grand staterooms and King Ludwig I's famous "Gallery of Beauties" room. The park at Schloss Nymphenburg is large enough to find tranquillity, and you will come upon a combination of beautiful formal gardens with woods and meadows, where you can discover incredible hunting lodges, and follies, including one of Europe´s first modern tiled and heated indoor pools.

Glyptothek

The Glyptotek is Munich's oldest museum and contains an outstanding collection of Greek and Roman sculptures. One can relax in an idyllic Italian cafe, which is even among Munich residents an insider tip.

St. Michael

The Jesuit church of St. Michael in Munich is the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps. The style of the building had an enormous influence on Southern German early baroque architecture. On Sunday mornings at 9.00 a catholic service with usually beautiful orchestral music.

  

Alte Pinakothek

The Alte Pinakothek houses one of the world´s most important collections of 14th to 18th century European paintings. More than 800 paintings are displayed, among them numerous well-known masterpieces from Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach, Rubens, Van Dyck, Titian, Tintoretto and Rembrandt.

Lenbach

Lenbach will host ESOPRS Gala Dinner on Friday night, September 10, 2010. St. Peter ("Alter Peter")

 Saint Peter's is Munich's oldest parish church . The Renaissance tower known as "Old Peter" is a city landmark and offers visitors a wonderful view of the city and on clear days of the nearby Alps.

 

Deutsches Museum

Sailing ships, models of atoms, windmills, space probes, diesel locomotives, industrial robots, organs, lifeboats, ... this unbelievable abundance of technical achievement - and lots more - can be found in the Deutsches Museum. The ideal location for a rainy afternoon.

Englischer Garten

Munich´s famous 900-acre park with shaded paths, brooks, ponds and swans. It is best known for its four beer gardens (Chinesischer Turm, Seehaus, Hirschau, Aumeister) and stretches from the center of the city (near Odeonsplatz) to the northern city border.

One of the four beer gardens in the city park "Englischer Garten" which is only a short walk away from the ESOPRS venue. You will find beer from the Hofbräu, Brezels, roast chicken and radish in cosmopolitan atmosphere under the Chinese Tower, which was built over 200 years ago.

Munich's famous open-air market with stalls that offer fruits and vegetables from all over the world but also local specialities like traditional Munich Weißwurst, mushrooms and berries, sea food, delicious cheeses from all over Europe, herbs, honey products, sushi and hand-made straw puppets. You buy your snack and enjoy it with a pint of beer in the centrally located beer garden - a relaxing break guaranteed.

Bavaria and Ruhmeshalle

Klenze's Ruhmeshalle and the 30m high cast-bronze statue of the Bavaria overlook the Theresienwiese, the meadow on which every year at the end of September the famous Oktoberfest attracts more than six million visitors.

Traditional cafe known to students and professors of the nearby Munich University for its superb homemade cakes since more than 100 years - a lovely place to rest.

Müllersches Volksbad

This swimming pool was when completed in 1901 the largest and most expenive swimmig pool in the world. Today an art nouveau jewel and one of the most beautiful bathhouses in Europe.

Beer garden Augustiner Keller

 One of the oldest beer gardens in the centre of the city where you can enjoy the best beer in town and  Bavarian delicacies under chestnut trees. Short walking distance from the main station.

BallaBeni Icecream

Probably the best Italian ice cream in town: Chancing selection of 12 different tastes, such like milk-mint, lemon-basil or chocolate-ginger. Plus one taste for free. The chef  Giorgio Ballabeni seems to be a perfectionist in composing and producing ice cream.  Ideal location: Just between the University and the "Pinakothek der Moderne". Disadvantage: often long queues. 

 

Da Rosario

The small restaurant "Da Rosario" is well known for home made pasta - a nice family run Italian place close to the University. Good quality food, easy setting and moderate prices.

Conviva im Blauen Haus

A cooperative project restaurant belonging to one of Munich´s famous theaters ("Kammerspiele"). The slogan is "light and fresh - cross-country and regional". In a clearly designed dining-hall without any kitsch one finds carefully prepared and ambitious menus, which are tasty and surprisingly moderate calculated (four-course menu of the evening €23.50).

Anna Restaurant & Bar

Stylish bar and restaurant for locals and internationals, from breakfast till nightcap. Centrally located on the "Stachus" between main station and Marienplatz. Good choice of Sushi, modern, but still tasty menues and good selection of drinks at the bar; reasonable pricing.

Geisel's Vinothek

A melange of a vine tasting place with an excellent choice from different destinations and a restaurant celebrating Italian and Bavarian cuisine, for a blend of tastes and cultures. Always busy, locals and international public, but not a tourist trap.
